IF YOU SEE MY MOTHER
Directed by Nathanaël Guedj
Sponsored by Libby S. Harwitz and Burton Blender
Max (Félix Moati, Resistance) sees things that aren’t there. More like people who aren’t there. More specifically, Monique (Noémie Lvovsky, The End of Love), his recently deceased mother who appears to be refusing to leave her son’s side.
An unapologetic mama’s boy, Max has always considered his mother to be his best friend and trusted confidant. However, as much as a young, single ophthalmologist can enjoy his mother’s company, post-mortem, time A.D. (After Mom) has undoubtedly turned Max’s world upside down. Forget having friends over or bringing a woman home! Unless Max is willing to subjugate his guests to his mother’s scrutiny, any semblance of a healthy social life is out the window. He acknowledges his mother’s death, but he has not allowed himself to feel the pain of her passing. It’s not until Max begins seeing Ohiana (Sara Giraudeau), a shrink who shares office space with him, that the extent of his neurosis becomes clear. Ready to move on, all he needs now is Ohiana to give him one more chance and the courage to say goodbye.
This wonderfully zany and utterly French modern take on Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex is the perfect film to see with your mom this Mother’s Day!
