Presented in Commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day

We never forget the lives lost, the impossibly colossal scope of the Shoah, and the promise that it will never happen again. Yet through this darkest chapter of humanity, there is also hope. As we commemorate the victims of the Holocaust, we also memorialize the heroes of this devastation, the ones who saw injustice being done and did something about it. Whether they be the Jews who helped warn others of their impending doom or their Christian neighbors who hid them in their homes, every individual has a story to tell. The list of these people is endless, and their courage in risking their lives to save others will never be forgotten.

2024 now marks 79 years since the liberation of Auschwitz. For years now, stories of survival and heroism during Hitler’s regime have continued to be told through a visual lens, and they will never stop being told. The years go by, but we will never forget these brave souls.

In commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, PJFM is proud to present MY DEAR HANNA, a short documentary film and addition to the ever-growing list of essential Holocaust cinema. Produced by JTWO, a full-service film and video production service here in Philadelphia, the film will be available to stream on both our digital platform AND digital app from January 27-28, 2024. (TWO full days.)

PJFM is eternally grateful to JTWO and everyone involved with the making of this film for allowing us to premiere this outstanding motion picture.

MY DEAR HANNA

Directed by Matt Sullivan
Documentary Short | USA | 2023 | 31 min | English

Everything changed for Marianne Szegedy-Maszak the day she found a cache of letters written by her father, Aladár, in the bedroom of her mother, Hanna, after her passing in 2002. What unfolds through this multitude of letters is a timeless love story between a Jewish woman and Christian man amidst the tumult and terror of Hitler’s dictatorship. Marianne recounts the history of her parents’ perilous lives during the war and transports viewers back to 1939 Hungary, the first country after World War I to adopt antisemitic laws and later align itself with Nazi Germany. Hanna, a member of Hungary’s most significant (and Jewish) industrialist conglomerate, was forced to evade the Nazis while her father, a wartime diplomat, worked directly for Hitler before protesting his leader’s ideologies, a fateful choice with devastating consequences. Throughout Hitler’s reign of terror, the love between Marianne’s parents persisted, unveiling itself decades later for their daughter to uncover. A heartwarming family memoir, this deeply personal documentary honors a forgotten, tenacious romance from the war while ensuring that these true stories from the Shoah may never be forgotten.
