Video Taxidermy is a series of soft sculptures using LoVid’s textile. The sculptures capture moments from their ephemeral media and materialize them into form and texture, incorporating crisp, digitally-produced images with rough, handmade stitching. Working in media and craft simultaneously is their way to process the challenges and possibilities of the technological, networked age, and a growing sense of the world that intermixes virtual and physical, materials and simulations, fantasy and reality.

Young Antiquities, a series of media objects, embraces relationships between time and physical presence, a utopian post-material world and the reality of decomposition. Using an array of 3D capture devices, from high-end tools for archaeological research to hand-held App-based camera-scans, LoVid translated textile sculptures from their Video Taxidermy series into virtual form. These digital re-compositions are presented as animated virtual sculptures in GIF form.

Young Antiquities is made possible with funds from the New York State Council on the Arts in Partnership with Wave Farm: Media Arts Assistance Fund, a re-grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, Electronic Media and Film Program, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Collaborating since 2001, LoVid’s works combine handmade and machine-produced video, sound, craft, Do It Yourself philosophy, electro-engineering, and textile. Venues where LoVid’s work has been exhibited include the New Museum, The Jewish Museum, Klaus Von Nichtssagend, Radiator Gallery, Smack Mellon, Netherlands Media Art Institute, and The Science Gallery. LoVid has performed live video and music in venues including MoMA, PS1, Museum of the Moving Image, Parrish Museum, The Kitchen, Lampo, International Film Festival Rotterdam, and FACT. Their interdisciplinary projects have received support from The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, NYFA, NYSCA, STEIM, Rhizome, Cue Art Foundation, Eyebeam, Harvestworks, Wave Farm, Netherland-America Foundation, Franklin Furnace, LMCC, UCSB, Experimental TV Center, turbulence.org, and Greenwall Foundation.
